Wow — I’ve owned a box set of Kliban’s books for years (and yes, they are also falling apart), and they’re probably the last thing I’d ever think of in connection with Space Quest. Looking at the books now, I’m still trying to find something in common with the SQ series and completely failing.
One minor correction regarding a statement in the commentary, though: there *is* a Kliban drawing of a young man with the caption “Roger Wilco” (a skinny, nerdish type with a blank expression, dark hair, square glasses, a plaid shirt and a barely perceptible chin), but it *doesn’t* appear in Never Eat Anything Bigger than Your Head — it appears in Whack Your Porcupine. The guy eating only the heads off of chocolate bunnies (which *does* appear in NEABTYH) is called Robert, not Roger. (Just in case anyone picked up a copy of NEABTYH and were dismayed to find that there were no characters named Roger Wilco in it.)
Space Quest: Chapter One is my favorite of the text parser Sierra games, along with Police Quest: In Pursuit of the Death Angel. I can’t quite decide which one I like better. I love Police Quest’s realism, but I also love playing the role of a humble janitor who ends up saving his solar system. The Star Generator storyline is one of my favorite parts of the entire Space Quest series. I think it gave Space Quest a bit of a necessarily solid foundation, so it wasn’t all just gags. And Space Quest 1 is the only SQ game that really has a hero’s ending. It was a bit too much to see Roger yet again busted down to janitor status for Space Quest 6.
